While looking for replacements for Google reader, which is due to be retired soon, one of the most promising options seems to be tiny tiny rss. The only problem I’ve found so far is that there’s no demo site for it, even those that I did find don’t seem to be installed/enabled any more..

So for anyone else who is stuck and wants a quick demo of tiny tiny rss before deciding whether to use it full time I’ve installed it at http://tinytinyrss.icnerd.com/ – You can register a new account (or use demo/demo if it’s not been changed) on there and test away, but I wouldn’t go as far as relying on it as your Google Reader replacement at that url – it’d definitely be a better idea to install your own!

It’ll stay there as long as I can possibly keep it there, should it be broken or erroring please let me know via the contact form and I’ll get it fixed/reinstalled

Update: I’ve also installed a ttrss demo mobile frontend from https://github.com/mboinet/ttrss-mobile. Register an account using the main site then you’ll be able to log into mobile

If there’s any interest I’d be happy to create an auto-install hosted server option or an install service to ICNerd for a low cost. Please let me know via /contact if this sounds like something you’d use!

TL;DR It keeps getting turned off by power management settings. Look there.

Update: If this is still occurring, or has recently started coming back follow the second option and ensure the power settings haven’t come back – For some reason my laptop decided to re-enable the setting at some point (Windows update? I don’t know)

Plagued by the constant disconnecting from the wifi whenever I wandered off for a few moments to do something in meatspace I had to find out what was going on.

Then I procrastinated.. and completely forgot about it.

Then it did it again so I started searching. Piecing together giblets of information from the internet I figured out there’s multiple places to switch off the wifi power management.

First bit: We’ll disable it in power management: Head on over to the control panel. Press+hold the Windows key and hit R. In the text box that pops up type “Edit power plan”.

Change advanced settings, that’s the one we want. Open up the “Wireless Adapter Settings” then “Power Saving Mode” and make sure it doesn’t disconnect your wifi to save power by setting (at least AC, but I went with both because I live life on the edge). Switch it up to Maximum Performance which should stop it from disconnecting at random.

I say should, as it didn’t work for me. After a (longer, to be fair) while it disconnected again. As it turns out there’s another place to control a similar setting.

Second bit: Go into your network settings (oh where have you it this time Microsoft I need to brush up on my Windows-fu! ) Control panel again -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings (on the left hand menubar)

Right click your wifi adapter -> Properties -> Configure -> Power Management

Uncheck the box “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”

Worked so far, anyway..

P.S. Sick of your computer pretending to be a tablet? Try ClassicShell - An absolutely 100% free, open source piece of software to go back to the classic Windows start bar / button.
What is all this tablet about anyway Microsoft, quit having a midlife crisis.

P.P.S. I know that last little bit looked like a cheeky advert but I recommend only through being a very happy user

Just want the latest version of git but Centos 6 doesn’t provide using yum? Personally I needed this to install the completely awesome GitList

Before you start on this you should probably know that this will likely interfere with yum if you ever try installing git with yum or rpm.. In that scenario you should probably roll your own RPM and install it with the package manager.. I’ll end up getting round to doing so but for now I’ve not got the time

Just go ahead and install the requirements with Yum before continuing

yum install perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker gettext-devel expat-devel curl-devel zlib-devel openssl-devel openssl-devel gcc-c++ make

Then grab the git source, extract it, move it to a nicer directory name, cd to said directory

wget -O git-source.tar.gz https://api.github.com/repos/git/git/tarball/master

tar zxvf git-source.tar.gz
mv git-git* gitsource
cd gitsource

Make it.

make prefix=/usr install

Try it out

git --version

Should be 1.8.2 or whatever the latest version is at the time you’re reading this. Now go on to Install Gitlist!

Grab the current version, apply the patch. Apply the other patch. Compile. Make. Make install. Get an A.

Always, always verify your files and patches before applying them! I’m not responsible if things break, etc, etc!

wget http://www.apsis.ch/pound/Pound-2.6.tgz
tar xf Pound-2.6.tgz
cd Pound-2.6
wget https://github.com/goochjj/pound/commit/2f69c71b0314538f2a6218f624bdd2b954e5dbc8.patch
patch -i 2f69c71b0314538f2a6218f624bdd2b954e5dbc8.patch

I realise I should make a patch file but I’m in a bit of a rush!
after applying the patch above open up config.c and jump to line 1138.

Underneath
SSL_CTX_set_options(pc->ctx, ssl_op_enable);

add
SSL_CTX_set_options(pc->ctx, SSL_OP_NO_COMPRESSION);

Save it, run ./configure, make, make install
Restart pound
